Dr. Katie Heinrich is the Director of the Functional Intensity Training Laboratory at Kansas State University, and she is internationally recognized for her work in high-intensity functional training (HIFT) research, exercise and obesity, and occupational epidemiology. In this episode, we explore her research on the health benefits of HIFT, how shared suffering and supportive competition creates community, improves training compliance, and long-term training outcomes. Dr. Heinrich also explains why listening to your body and not pushing your limits daily is the key to preventing exercise burnout.

 

ABOUT Katie Heinrich

Katie M. Heinrich, PhD, FACSM, FAAHB is a Professor and Interim Head of the Department of Kinesiology at Kansas State University. She is the Director of the Functional Intensity Training Laboratory (https://bit.ly/fitlab), providing research mentoring in social and behavioral factors related to initiation and adherence to high intensity functional training (HIFT) group exercise programs as well as health and fitness outcomes. Dr. Heinrich is internationally recognized for her HIFT research, exercise and obesity, and occupational epidemiology. She focuses on populations across the lifespan including youth, tactical athletes, healthy and overweight/obese adults, cancer survivors and older adults. She has over 100 peer reviewed published research articles and has received over $3.4 million grant funding for her research.
